City of Charlottesville

The City of Charlottesville is located in west Central Virginia, approximately 100 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. and 70 miles northwest of Richmond, Virginia. Situated within the upper Piedmont Plateau, at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and at the headwaters of the Rivanna River, Charlottesville was established as a town in 1762 by the Virginia General Assembly, and was incorporated as an independent city in 1888. As a result of eight annexations, the most recent of which was in 1968, the City is 10.4 square miles.

The City is autonomous and entirely independent of any county or any other political subdivision. It does not have the same boundaries with or is not subject to taxation by any county or school district, and is not liable for any county or school district indebtedness.

Charlottesville serves as the economic, cultural, and educational center of a multi-county region in Central Virginia. In 1981, the United States Census Bureau recognized the Charlottesville area as a Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area (SMSA). The SMSA includes the City of Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, and Nelson. In 2014, the Census Bureau estimated the population of the City to be 45,593 and the Charlottesville SMSA population of over 200,000.

Charlottesville Gas offers a $200 rebate when you switch from an electric, propane or natural gas tank water heater to an energy saving tankless natural gas water heater.

Programmable Thermostat Rebate

A rebate of up to $100 can be used to cover the cost of the thermostat or the expense of installing it. You may choose to have your rebate amount credited to your utility account or mailed to you in the form of a check.

Rain Barrel Rebate

Generally sized between 50 and 60 gallons, a rain barrel is a container connected to a downspout on your home, office or garage. Its purpose is to capture some of the precipitation that lands on the roof and store it for future use, mostly on landscapes or gardens. This decreases the stormwater runoff from roofs and helps save potable water. To qualify, you must be a City of Charlottesville water customer in good standing.
